This weekend was fairly extreme. We had a blast at the NMAI's Día de los Muertos festivities. Here's Liam chilling in his skater skelly shirt.
And I coaxed Thea to reluctantly pose in front of a very cool altar.

Then later we went to Rock n Romp, which is always a blast. Even better, it was the Halloween show. Thea and Lila were both dragons.
I got Thea a cute poodle costume that she isn't wild about. She has explained to me, patiently, that although she does like it, she doesn't like it for her. (That's a quote.) So we let Emma borrow it.
Insanely cute, right? I keep having to remind myself, Thea's costume isn't about me. Liam's, however, is.
Not that he got a lot out of the show.
Dashiell is dressed as Dash from the Incredibles. Clever! Rosie was a very pretty princess of some sort, I think. That seemed to be the theme of the night, princesses and dragons.
Thea really liked the show. She was a bit overwhelmed at first, as always, but after a while mellowed out and bobbed along to the music while sipping her drink. She's totally my girl.
Lastly, it isn't my story to tell, but this scared the hell out of Rosie.
Yesterday was awesome; today, though, was the worst. Todd woke up in excruciating pain around 12:30am. An hour later, when Todd started throwing up and looking like he was going to pass out, we called Don, my new best friend, to come over and stay at the house while I took Todd to the emergency room.
Here's a tip: know the route to the nearest emergency room before there's an emergency. I got lost on the way, and Todd, writhing in agony, sweating, throwing up every few minutes, nonetheless had to hold it together enough to get us back on track. Totally not cool.
The diagnosis is kidney stones and a bad infection. The up side: hillbilly heroin and Cipro!
Not to be all "poor me" when Todd is seriously suffering, but being a single parent on two hours of sleep SUCKS.

I'm so sorry to hear about Todd! My father has had kidney stones... awful, awful business.
I'm told by people in a position to know that the pain of kidney stones is second only to childbirth.
So you still win the suffering sweepstakes!
Perhaps, but Todd doesn't get an epidural.
Yes, but don't kidney stones take several days to pass? (not that labor and delivery don't as well). Poor Todd - maybe an epidural isn't such a bad idea...
I've had friends who've passed kidney stones and who've given birth. They say the kidney stone is a sharper, sicker-all-over, pain. Birth is rhythmic, starts off mild then builds to a crescendo. Kidney stones start off dreadful and get worse.
Quite frankly, neither event has much appeal in the pain sweepstakes although I do love the "well-loved" child, hope of the future and joy abounding.
Candles lit that Todd won't be one of those who develop recurrent kidney stones. Here's hoping his follow-up care is adequate and he doesn't have a kidney full of stones just waiting for lithotrypsy.
Once is enough!!!
OOF! I've had kidney stones. I was 19, and they were too big to pass. It turned into a month long nightmare and $150,000.00 hospital bill. ACK!
It seems like an odd thing to wish upon your man, but I hope that he's able to pass them. BRING ON THE DRUGS!
And you can be as 'poor me' as you want, it is hard to parent by yourself!!
Ack! How totally AWFUL. I hope Todd is feeling better.
(I was gonna e-mail you about the NMAI Day of the Dead festivities, but then I had no internet access Friday -- we spent the whole day at various DC agencies or en route to Baltimore, dealing with home study paperwork. I'm glad you found out about it and went!)
Also, I love the story about Thea explaining that she likes the poodle costume, but not for her. She's such a thoughtful kid!
MAN! Todd NEVER throws up!! That must be/have been the worst pain ever. Is he feeling better or worse?
I know, it's true! He hadn't thrown up in 20 years before we had kids, and after (sweet li'l germ factories) only a couple times. Poor guy. He's feeling a lot better in some ways, but still has some residual problems, possibly unrelated. He's seeing another doctor today.
Wait, DDM, I just read that again! HOLY CRIPES!! Wow, that totally sucks on so many levels.
