Rick Santorum? Gone? We can still use santorum to mean the frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex, though, right? Because I'm not giving that up. (Not that it comes up in conversation that often, but still.)
There's more good news across the country. Maryland, I'm very proud of you. Virginia, I'm giving you a stern look and shaking my head. The race between James Webb and George "Macaca" Allen should have been a landslide but is still too close to call, and the marriage amendment? Shameful and sad.

The news is good

I never in a million years thought I would support a candidate from Ronnie's cabinet until that man decided to run against Macca Boy. Jim Webb may not be the progressive Democrat I usually go for but sure beats that tobacco-spitting, noose-hanging frat boy. Virginia, as a whole, still has a ways to go and must learn from NOVA but has received applause from a native son now living in Minnesota. Having gone to school in the Bay Area, I am giddy with the prospect of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker.
Having lived, briefly, deep in the heart of the cultural and economic backwater that is central Virginia (rural Halifax County, to be precise), I am impressed that the state appears to be turning even a teensy bit blue. I just keep picturing the people we would run into in the various small towns around our farm and I can't see a single one of them voting for Webb, despite Allen's fuck-ups. During the runup to the 04 election I remember seeing three or four houses and little farms with Kerry/Edwards signs and I remember thinking "I should bake some pies and go introduce myself," but we moved before I had a chance.
Virginia is a strange state. Amy, you and Collin must have felt incredibly isolated.
Woo, Nancy Pelosi! Giddy, yes, that's the perfect way to describe it.
