One word: Bioplastics

Check out these biodegradable plastics. Cool! When I first heard about this a year ago, you couldn't get spudware in this country. Now it looks like a wide range of products is available.

... Would it be awful to get everyone biodegradable plastic for Christmas?

Well, *I* think it's a great idea to get everyone biodegradable plastic for Christmas -- but then I would, being in a similar freaked-out state these days.

What's frightening, also, is realizing that plastic is so pervasive that it's hard to find alternatives.

And just today I caved and got miso soup for lunch (I have a cold, and soup seemed necessary), even though I knew I the only place I could get it would put it in a styrofoam container. (I declined the plastic spoon, plastic bag, etc., but still.)

I am trying to tell myself it's like dieting, one slip doesn't mean you should give up.

It's true. I've tried unsuccessfully to avoid disposable plastic for just one day since I read the article on your blog. It's impossible. All our food is wrapped in plastic, the trash bags are plastic, I clean up after the dog with plastic bags.... Argh.

We're so stocking up on the bioplastic bags. And Todd and I are going to start making our own bread, because my god does it really need to be wrapped in that much plastic?!

They've been using this stuff for years as a replacement for styrofoam packing peanuts. It's made out of pressurized vegetable oil and disintegrates in water. Pretty hard for harp seals to choke on them, but I'm sure they'll try.

They did a thing on the radio about the plastic bottles that bottled water comes in. Companies shred that stuff up into pellets, melt them into little plastic balls, and sell them for big bucks to China where they turn it into more plastic crap for us to buy.

And this is all just getting people prepared for Soylent Green, now in a variety of flavors! There's Caffeine-Free Soylent Green, Tartar Control Soylent Green, Cruelty-Free Organic Soylent Green (Now Made with Mean People!).

I read that, about how plastic that is recycled is still made into other plastics, and the pellets are actually a biohazard themselves.

"Caffeine-Free Soylent Green," heh.

There's an old story about a toxic waste disposal company in Jersey that was owned by the mob. The Feds paid them to truck hazardous waste to landfills across the country. Instead of paying the state where the toxics were deposited, the company just drove around at night with the spigots open, and pocketed the cash.

I kinda wonder if plastics companies aren't doing the same thing. Tiny amounts of toxic crap spread out over trillions of bottles seems much more cost-effective than, y'know, actually disposing of it properly.

You know the kids would just love X-TREME SOYL-N-T GREEN Energy Drink(Made from INTESE People!)

Totally! The tiny particles of toxic materials going god knows where. It's all pretty depressing.
