We've decided to start giving Thea a weekly allowance: 25 cents for spending, 25 cents for saving, 25 cents for investing, and 10 cents for charity. (I realize that's not a whole lot for charity, but we didn't want her feeling like you have to spend more than that to be a good person.) (Yes, I realize we're probably over-thinking this whole thing.)
The other night at Ikea, she made her first purchase ever: a small stuffed shark. She was so proud she almost cried after handing over her money and getting back the toy and receipt.

Holy schmoly, what a cutie! She looks so happy!!! I wish I could've seen that. What did the cashier do?
The cashier was great, all "Oh wow, your first purchase ever? Here you go, honey, enjoy!" Then Thea wrapped her arms around Todd and buried her face in his neck with a huge grin.
How cute!
IKEA generally rocks.
Gotta teach them youngins to exploit the proletariat early nowdays. Like PopPop used to say, "Son, the machinery of capitalism is oiled by the blood of the working classes, and that's how we likes it! CATCH!" And then he'd huck an empty can of Schaefer at my heqad and I'd have to duck. Good times.
And don't forget to tell them how compounded interest is so powerful, it can destroy the Planet Alderraan. They'll look at you funny, but trust me, you need to tell them this EVERY DAY.
Dude, we ARE the proletariat, and hoping to god we don't slip.
Good for you! And good for Thea! I think it's really important to teach kids about money early, that way they don't go ape shizz with a credit card at age 19. *ahem* I'm just saying.
I know, I really hope I can get her used to the saving and investing thing. I hope I can get myself used to it, too!
A real promotion.
Cheers
