My kids are cool

On Saturday I took the kids to Watkins Park for a quick carousel ride while Todd went to play music with his friends. Before heading out, I threw a chicken in the oven, along with some potatoes and turnips that I got on a lark at the farmer's market. What does one do with turnips, anyway? Obviously not cook them like potatoes. Yuck. Sue and the kids came over for dinner, and she said that they turned out "interesting but not enjoyable," that eating them was an experience she was glad to have had but not to repeat. Well said!

I forgot my wallet at home and so had to scrounge up change from the seats of the car for the carousel ride. Thea was a good sport about it, and even though she's been talking about riding a carousel again since we got back from the beach, she assured me that it would still be fun just to look at the horses. Luckily my car seats are shaped such that all change gets emptied out of your pockets when you sit down. Success!

On the way back to the car, Thea almost stepped on this snake. I was impressed and VERY grateful that she saw it before treading on its tail. I didn't notice it at all, which I guess is evidence at how far removed I am from the girl who grew up in rural Arkansas.

On Sunday we went to some friends' house for a barbecue. Thea and Rosie immediately hid under the desk in the office. They were a bit hard to find because they were completely silent except for crunching potato chips and occasionally a lonely wail from a harmonica.

Liam, meanwhile found the cutest hat, accessorized with my sunglasses.

Eventually, of course, all good barbecues become pantsless events.

Root vegetables like turnips are best in stews, like Russian Boiled Beef. I did a boiled beef ribs with carrots, onions, parsnips, and turnips that was pretty good. Served with lots of horseradish and a big mug of beer.

Is there anything that horseradish and beer can't improve?

OK, old cook weighing in here. Marinade them in olive oil and seasonings, roast slowly in flat trays in oven, wonderful. Brings out all the flavor. Boiling plus horseradish and beer works for me also (I love fresh horseradish and good beer).

Forgot to say that is a great, evocative shot of the girls under the desk.

Another thing you can do with turnips -- cut them into 1"-2" cubes and boil in chicken stock (or, if you're me, water with a couple boullion cubes). The saltiness of the stock soaks into the turnips and offsets that weird bitterness they have.

(I've tried the roasting-with-chicken thing, and yeah, it doesn't work like you'd think. Parsnips might work like that, they're kinda carroty, but I hate both carrots and parsnips, so I've never bothered to try.)

Nonna, isn't that photo the CUTEST! I almost posted a video of the girls, but it was just their butts under the desk with "crunch crunch crunch .... hhhwwweeeeeeeeeee ... crunch crunch crunch" as the audio.

Molly, I think that was my mistake. Turnips kind of look like parsnips, and the words are similar, so I thought they'd be the same-ish.

And in that video of the girls under the desk, beyond the crunching and the 'monica, you'd hear the muffled guffaws of Kelly and myself while we tried to keep it together! Rosie and Thea are teh CUTETZ!
