Despite the failures of the dinner I made last week for Jennifer (whatever, it was all edible and done when we got home; close enough!), the wine was nice. And as Daniel points out, there's a FBW rule — Finish the Bottle of Wine — when serving risotto. I had a Black Mountain zinfandel from Trader Joes on-hand from a wine-buying excursion a few weeks ago. I usually don't drink a lot of red wine, mostly because we're on a tight budget and cheap red wine seems meaner, more cruel and unforgiving, than cheap white wine. But I do love zinfandels, and at $5.99 the price was not bad. It had a lovely velvety, fruity spiciness that helped make up for the mediocre chicken.
Speaking of budgetary concerns, Todd gave his notice at his job on Monday. He's quitting to go back to school full time, starting with the upcoming summer session. He plans to get a teaching degree, most likely a double major of education and geology. Although the next few years are going to be tight and insanely busy, it'll be worth it when he's able to have the same schedule as the kids when they start school. I couldn't be more excited and proud of him!

Congratulations Todd!!!! I'm so excited for you and for all the students who are going to have you as a teacher. Yay for humanity!
and speaking of humanity, the risotto FBW rule is also good for humanity, as long as you don't FBW and drive. They don't mix.
Three cheers for Todd, being a teacher is very inportant.
Like the Bunper sticker says:If you can read this,Thank a teacher, since it is inenglish that a soldier! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
What a savvy decision! Todd you are very courageous to offer yourself up to pursue this, but I suspect all will benefit (family and future students alike) and no one (family especially) will ever regret it. You have so much to offer as a teacher and waiting a few years to do this just adds some life experience to the mix (missing from the palette of many teachers who start so young). Bravo!! I will follow your progress (and I am silently acknowledging the more obvious sacrifices everyone will be making as you go through this, time, temperament and finances) with great interest.
Nonnamadonna, you have, as usual, sussed out the heart of the matter. Todd is definitely courageous to sacrifice for his family's future this way. It'll be a tough few years, but after that, we'll be golden.
I think this is an amazing decision. Todd is such a nurturing soul that it makes sense that the universe pulled him in this direction. Every person I know who is a teacher or was a teacher is incredibly fulfilled.
Went to a high school friend's (actually Tempe HS drama teacher) house for his 40th birthday.. ahem. didn't realize that teachers had two story, fabulous five bedroom houses with pools and can afford five kids....his wife was also a teacher...Eye opener for sure.
Arbor Mist has a nice blackberry ....
Welcome to this next chapter of your life - it sounds challenging but truly wonderful!
What a huge and awesome change!
Bravo! You can't win if you don't play!
Congrats to Todd!
Thanks for the Trader Joe's tip too. I often leave without wine because the selection is overwhelming on the cheap end, and IME, there is a huge discrepancy between decent cheap wine and cough syrup mixed with ass.
You go, Todd!!!
yay for Todd! Nonnamadonna (who, incidentally, has been pushing me to do something similar) is right - it will be a tough few years, but worth it in the end for you guys. Our neighbor teaches at a university here, and has the summers off. They have two kids, two-years apart, and it is working out wonderfully for them. My other neighbors across the street both teach grade school, and everyone in the 'hood is envious of their two-story, five-bedroom house and carefree lifestyle, which includes lots of vacations and the disposable income to add a two-car detached garage with Pella windows and radiant floor heating. That, and they just seem to really like what they do.
Thanks for all the encouragement, guys! We really appreciate it.
Go Todd!!! That's fantastic!!!!
li am a red zin fanatic. black mountain made me stop in my tracks. the best zin i've had maybe ever... i'm not too extensively knowledgable about the varieties, but this one is soooo good. mmm.
