No chickens for the Os

Due in large part to the help people generously offered here and on Twitter (thanks, guys!), I finally was able to reach someone who could tell me if we're allowed to keep hens in our College Park, Maryland, suburban back yard.

No, in fact, we are not.

But several people pointed out that I would have problems only if my neighbors narc'd on me, and that they might be able to be bought off with eggs. Something to think about, anyway.

For those of you who are still interested in how backyard chickens can be a part of sustainable living — not to mention the DIY free-range, organic eggs — My Pet Chicken looks like a decent one-stop-shopping site for chickens, coops, feed, and how-to guides.

for the love of Dog -- PLEASE don't mention this idea to BC, the girl who wants to have animals and more animals here in allergy central. as lefty-crunchy as the People's Republic in which i live is, i don't think my neighbors will be remotely happy about a coop in my backyard. (but hella fun it would be!!!)

sorry about the chickens. maybe there's a CSA you can support?

You can't? Why not? Can you get a special kind of chicken that can pass for something else, like say... a dog?

I don't know about the CSA. Aren't they kind of expensive? The main reason I was thinking of getting chickens was because we could get our fancy cage-free eggs for free (minus the outrageous cost of a henhouse, of course).

Melissa, I like your thinking.

I used to be all over the urban chicken coop (Portland does a coop tour every year - tres cool), but now I am OBSESSED with worm farming. Or vermicomposting as I like to smugly say since I am now an expert after thinking about it for three days.

I'm with Melissa. Maybe you could get the chicken to bark?
