I am an artist, my medium is cupcakes

We had some friends over on Saturday to carve and paint pumpkins, and I made some monster cupcakes ("for the kids") that turned out great, if I do say so myself. The orange frosting covers red velvet cupcakes; the purple covers my favorite chocolate zucchini cupcakes. A tip for my vegan friends: Since two of the kids have egg allergies, I replaced the eggs with one banana and one-quarter cup of applesauce, and added about an eighth of a teaspoon extra of baking powder.

To cover the cupcakes, I used white frosting that I put in a plastic bag and colored with food coloring, which I handed off to the kids to squish around so the color was evenly distributed. Then I cut a tiny piece of one corner off and squeezed the frosting onto the cupcakes. The monsters are made with gummy lifesavers, M&Ms, small jelly beans, Twizzlers pull-and-peel cherry licorice, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and frosting gel.

so i gave bed-bound Jay a cupcake and only after he asked for another (which i didn't have) i told him what was in it. the look on his face...priceless.

What, not a zucchini fan? But they're so good!

A day of expanding horizons for our husbands. Todd is a-ok with lamb, but only if they're made into your meatballs. Baby steps.

I am inspired. Granted I will not actually take these myself (I am in the midst of sewing an Obi Wan costume a la episode IV). But if I were to make cupcakes, I would totally steal your tricks.

Those are some serious skillz you've got there.

Tell me...have you ever tried "soda cake"? I've seen it on other blogs, but am afraid to try it.

You apparently just add soda to the mix and get to skip the eggs completely. I'd love to see what your awesome baking skillz could do with that.

I pushed a couple cupcake fotos to my Facebook page. The soft filter on the first one gives it a nice eerie vibe.
