21 questions to ask your kids

[UPDATE: See also, 22 questions from other years.]

This is a meme from Facebook. I know I should answer it there, but I already neglect my blog too much as it is.

Copy this note, ask your kid the questions and write them down exactly how they respond. Tag me back if you haven't done this; I'd love to hear the answers.

1. What is something Mommy always says to you?
Liam: "No."
Thea: "I love you."

2. What makes Mommy happy?
Liam: "I love you."
Thea: Me and Liam

3. What makes Mommy sad?
Liam: Rolling in the cars. [I have no idea what that means.]
Thea: When me and Liam are gone or hurt.

4. How does Mommy make you laugh?
Liam: Saying "fart." [This is something I never, ever do. I find that word entirely too vulgar.]
Thea: Tickle us.

5. What was Mommy like as a child?
Liam: Me.
Thea: Me!

6. How old is Mommy?
Liam: 16? [I should add, this is as high as he can count right now.]
Thea: 30?

7. How tall is Mommy?
Liam: You're up to the sky!
Thea: This tall. A giant!

8. What is Mommy's favorite thing to do?
Liam: Having work.
Thea: Be with her kids.

9. What does Mommy do when you're not around?
Liam: Look for me.
Thea: Find us.

10. If Mommy becomes famous, what will it be for?
Liam: Bathtime.
Thea: Us.

11. What is Mommy really good at?
Liam: Drawing.
Thea: Running.

12. What is Mommy not very good at?
Liam: Screaming.
Thea: Keeping track of her keys and phone. And parking.

13. What does Mommy do for her job?
Liam: Having papers.
Thea: Pays money.

14. What is Mommy's favorite food?
Liam: Squash noodles. [Spaghetti squash.]
Thea: Sushi.

15. What makes you proud of Mommy?
Liam: Saying "I love you."
Thea: She helps me.

16. If Mommy were a cartoon character, who would she be?
Liam: Aquaman
Thea: You're really funny, so Shaggy.

17. What do you and Mommy do together?
Liam: Hugging and kissing.
Thea: Kiss and hug and love together.

18. How are you and Mommy the same?
Liam: Our last names
Thea: Same hair and same eyes and skin.

19. How are you and Mommy different?
Liam: I have white skin and you have brown skin.
Thea: Hair is a little bit more short than mine.

20. How do you know Mommy loves you?
Liam: Kiss and hugs me.
Thea: Because you always say I love you.

21. Where is Mommy's favorite place to go?
Liam: Work.
Thea: Aunt Heather's place.

Awesome! I look forward to when you become famous for bathtime.

Heather said...

That was nothing short of totally wonderful...
Be interesting to do it again in a week and see if they change their answers...
I want to hug them!!!

Yes, famous for bathtime. WTF?

It's hilarious that the kids think our favorite place to go is work. Maybe I've been pushing the whole "I work because I love my job!" thing a little too much.

haha, I loved the age guestimates. 16! Grandparents must seem several centuries old.

Also loved what you do for your job: have papers & pay money. lol!

hilarious. i want my kids to think i'm 16, too, but Her Majesty knows my real age, even the age it is turning next week. i fear her accuracy ;-)

oh wise bathtime queen. :-)

Excellent choice, to post here! All their answers are so scrumptious. However, I totally disagreen with Thea on parking—you have the best parking karma of anyone I know. :-)

I already predict that my kids' answers will be "I dunno." How do you get them to focus? I'll give it a go!

Nylonthread, I told them I needed their help with a project, and then I asked them the questions separately. Thea's comment about parking was because I tried to parallel park in Adams Morgan with them a few weekends earlier and could NOT seem to avoid the curb. It was awful. I ended up just leaving the car with one wheel in the grass.

I laughed until milk came out my nose. :)

It would be interesting to hear the questions answered a year from now to see how their understanding and views of the world have changed, become more insightful and perhaps even more divergent.

@T2, I did update it on this post:

but you're right, I really need to do that yearly. Thanks!

Just went through these with my 3 1/2 year old daughter. She understood the questions better than I thought she would. Thanks for the idea. I got her answers on video and we'll be able to laugh about them for years to come!

Oh- love the video the answers idea. Also, this is random, but I LOVE Pinterest for leading me off to all these different pages I would otherwise never have found!

JUST WHAT I THINK said...

This post was hilarious and sad, the answers are great but it's sad that my kids as teenagers and young adults would have to many accurate and unflattering answers - plus they all know my real age. I am pleased to say that my eighteen year old told me I have great skin for someone my age, I'm pretty sure it was a compliment.

When my daughter was in 1st grade (she's now a grandmother!), her teacher gave each student a multi-page booklet. The cover title was "All About My Mom." At the top of each page was 1 question like these. When I first read it at the open house, I laughed so hard I cried. Still treasure it!

Hi! I am totally new to the blogging experience and have just recently started one of my own, thanks in part to this post of yours! I loved this, and reading through the answers your kids gave, was totally fun! Anyway, I decided to give it a go and sit my kids down for an interview. It was amazing and so much fun! Thank you for the great idea and the wonderful memory for my husband and I to share (and keep record of) with our kids!
