The new couch

The kids and I took Abigail to pick up a new couch a couple weekends ago. As we were taking her old couch to the loading dock for trash pickup, I had a weird, swoony moment of realization that leaving it on a stinky loading dock would make me cry, so I insisted that we instead wrestle it onto the roof of Todd's station wagon and take it home, where it may or may not have fitted through our doorways.

Fit it did, after much exertion and cursing, and a certain amount of guilt on my part at keeping Todd from his studies. The kids have claimed it as their place to sit, especially Liam, who is kind of in love with Abby, anyway. Here he is after school, pantsless as usual, watching Batman with the requisite 15 toys at his side. Portrait of a typical evening.

I love posts like this - jotting down the ordinary and capturing it. If, ten or twenty years from now, we can bear to look back on our writing, I think these will be the posts that will stand out - the ones that recall details like Liam loves being pantsless and surrounded by his favorite toys. You might generally look back and see him at three like that, but without writing it down, would you specifically think it? These everyday bits are the foundations of memory. Awesome.

I think we'll want to look back and remember that Liam was in love with me! I would give him (and you) a hundred couches. . .

Thanks, NES! I completely agree. It doesn't make for scintillating writing, but it will probably be the part of my blog that is the most long-standingly useful.

Abigail, I don't think we'll have to look back and remember that he was in love with you. We'll always be reminded of that in the way he lights up each time he sees you.

Pantless describes my kids as under-5s completely accurately.

I love the couch story, Kel. We had 2 couches and one was 'well-loved' (from my college days, and bought used then). J spent countless hours on it, marked as his space by the toys and stuffies, and he loved it. Great for him, great for me -- I had a zen-like clear (though small) space to sit in as a result on the other couch. I think they need that space. Happy Liam!
