Our kids won't know that the cursive Q looks like a fancy 2

An article on Time's NewsFeed a couple days ago caught my eye. Apparently students in Indiana are no longer required to learn cursive writing. This doesn't really surprise me. I think they're not teaching cursive to the kids in Thea and Liam's school, either. Luckily, Thea has an interest and is teaching herself this summer from a workbook I got her.

While I don't think cursive was the most essential thing I ever learned, it's not like it took that long to master, and it does mean kids would be able to read things like letters written before 1990 or doctor's notes. Why can't both keyboard skills and cursive be taught? Would it really be that hard to fit in both? If so many art and music classes are being cut, surely there's room in the curriculum for cursive.
